How to Rent Out Your Stuff: A Practical Owner's Guide

The average Australian garage holds thousands of dollars of gear that gets used a handful of days a year. This guide covers what actually rents, how to price it, and how to stay in control of every booking, so the pressure washer in your shed starts paying for itself.

The gear already in your shed

You don't need to buy anything to start. The items renters search for most are the ones people already own: power tools, trailers, pressure washers, carpet cleaners, cameras, camping gear, party equipment. If it was expensive enough that you hesitated before buying it, someone nearby would rather rent it than buy their own. If you're after the broader money angle, our side hustles guide covers how renting compares to other ways of earning on the side.

What rents well

  • Trailers. Constant demand for moves and tip runs, and most sit parked 360 days a year.
  • Cleaning machines. Pressure washers and carpet cleaners book around end-of-lease dates and weekends.
  • Power tools and trade gear. Renovators need a tile cutter for one weekend, not forever.
  • Cameras, lenses and drones. High value, light use, easy handover.
  • Party and event gear. Marquees, trestle tables, speakers and lighting book for birthdays and weddings; see the party hire guide.
  • Camping and outdoor equipment. Tents, swags, kayaks and roof boxes peak around school holidays.

Create a listing that gets booked

  1. Photos sell it. Three or four clear, well-lit photos of the actual item, not a stock image.
  2. Name it like a search. "Gerni 2900psi pressure washer" gets found; "cleaning machine" doesn't.
  3. Describe the handover. What's included (hoses, blades, cases), pickup notes, and anything the renter should bring.
  4. Set your available days. Your listing only shows as bookable on the days of the week you choose, so it fits around your own use.

Listing on QRAUZ is free and takes a few minutes.

Pricing: hourly, daily or both

  • Anchor to commercial hire. Look up what a hire company charges per day for the same item, then undercut it comfortably. You have no depot costs; you can charge less and still do well.
  • Offer the rate types that fit the item. On QRAUZ you choose hourly, daily or both per listing. A jackhammer suits hourly; a camping set suits daily.
  • Start slightly low, then adjust. Early bookings earn reviews, and reviews earn the next bookings. You can edit prices any time.

You stay in control

  • Every booking needs your approval. A renter's card is held when they book, but nothing is charged until you accept. Decline and the hold is released.
  • You see who you're dealing with. Renters have profiles and reviews from past bookings, and you can chat before approving.
  • Pause any time. Deactivate a listing in My Listings and it disappears from search until you bring it back.

Getting paid

Renters pay by card through the platform. You connect your bank account once, when you create your first listing, and your earnings from each completed booking are paid out to it. QRAUZ charges owners a flat 9% per booking, only when you actually earn; listing costs nothing. The exact amounts are always shown before a booking is confirmed.

Owner FAQs

How much can I earn renting out my things?

It depends on the item and your suburb. As a guide, trailers, pressure washers and cameras commonly rent for $30 to $100 a day on peer-to-peer marketplaces. An item that books just three days a month at $50 a day earns about $1,800 a year.

Does it cost anything to list on QRAUZ?

No. Listing is free and there are no subscription or sign-up costs. QRAUZ charges owners a flat 9% fee per completed booking, so you only ever pay when you earn.

Do I have to accept every booking request?

No. Every booking waits for your approval. The renter's card is only held until you decide; if you decline, the hold is released and nobody is charged. You can also chat with the renter before approving.
